Eye Exams Protect Sight and Health

An eye exam is more than a sight test. Although learning about your vision needs can benefit your health and lifestyle, an eye exam evaluates the health of the whole visual system.

An eye exam is like a physical for your eyes, and it’s performed by a trained and licensed professional. Our optometrists are knowledgeable about eye health and can also recognize symptoms in your eyes related to your overall health, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

Regular eye exams are crucial for protecting eye health and preventing eye problems at any age.

How Often Should You Have an Eye Exam?

Regular visits to the optometrist can help you protect your vision and prevent eye disease. How regularly you schedule your appointments can depend on your unique eye care needs.

We follow these general recommendations set by the Canadian Association of Optometrists:

  • Adults 20–64 should have an eye exam every every 12-18 months
  • Adults 65+ should have an eye exam yearly

Patients with vision problems or health conditions may need more frequent exams. For example, patients with diabetes should have a diabetic eye exam at least once a year. Our optometrists will help you determine your appointment frequency based on your ocular health.

What to Expect at Your Eye Exam

While every eye exam includes a thorough look at your eyes, it also includes:

  • Analysis of your vision needs (work, school, sports)
  • Discussion of eye health and medical history
  • Measurement of visual acuity
  • Binocular vision assessment
  • Colour vision assessment (if required)
  • Evaluation of eye structures
  • Intraocular eye pressure (IOP) testing
  • Neurological assessment of the visual system
  • Screening for eye diseases and conditions

If you’ve previously been diagnosed with vision or eye problems, we’ll also reassess your eye health or update any prescriptions as needed. After your eye exam, our optometrists will recommend management or treatment options for any current ocular health concerns you may have.

We’ll also discuss prevention methods customized for your unique eye and vision needs. Prevention is crucial in protecting our eyes and overall health. For example, if you enjoy spending time outdoors, we’ll offer advice on how to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. Or, if you have complaints about digital eye strain or dry eye, we have lifestyle recommendations and treatment options to help you.

Trust Us, You’ll See

Regular eye exams provide your optometrist with insight into your changing health. When we look at your eyes, we see more than your vision. During eye exams, we take a close-up look at blood vessels and nerve tissue, giving us clues into your overall health.

We’ll work together to make your vision as comfortable as possible by developing a customized plan to maintain your health. Our eye doctors encourage you to ask questions during eye exams so you can leave your appointment feeling knowledgeable and empowered to make eye care decisions for you and your family.

Take an important step for your health today and book a comprehensive eye exam with us.
