What to Expect at a Contact Lens Fitting

Significant technological advances have made contact lenses accessible to a wider variety of prescriptions. Every pair of eyes is unique, so finding your precise fit can be a bit of a journey.

Most people who wear eyeglasses transition easily to contact lenses, but some patients may not be good candidates based on their overall eye health and other factors. For example, allergies and dry eye can impact your comfort and ability to wear contact lenses.

At a contact lens examination, our optometrists perform a comprehensive eye examination, assess your eye health, and ask questions about your lifestyle to determine what type of lens will work for your vision.

Your contact lens prescription must accommodate where the lens rests on your eye. A few measurements will be taken to ensure we find the right contact lenses for your eyesight and lifestyle. When we’ve found the best-fitting design, you’ll head home with a pair of diagnostic lenses. Trust us, you’ll see!

Are There Different Types of Contacts?

There are 2 main types of contact lenses: soft and RGP. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, and which is best for you can be a personal decision. Modern technological advancements have allowed both types to be suitable options for multiple vision and eye problems.

Other contact lenses use elements of either soft or RGP lenses.

Soft Contact Lenses

Soft contact lenses are composed of malleable plastic polymers, allowing flexibility and close fit over the cornea. Soft lenses are the most commonly worn type, often because they are the easiest for new wearers. The close fit also prevents foreign objects (dust, sand, etc.) from slipping under the lens.

Advantages

  • Greater initial comfort
  • Best for irregular wear
  • Less light sensitivity
  • Tend to stay in the eye (preferable for sports)
  • Available in tinted versions

Disadvantages

  • Less durability
  • Can dry out easily
  • More involved lens care
  • Susceptible to protein deposits

Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses are durable plastics that improve oxygen flow to the eye. Although it can take longer to get comfortable wearing RGP lenses, they generally provide sharper vision and can be a better choice for higher prescriptions or astigmatism.

Advantages

  • Durable material
  • Easier lens care
  • Can improve moisture for dry eyes
  • Resist protein deposits

Disadvantages

  • Can scratch or break
  • Can slip more easily
  • May take longer for new wearers to adjust
  • Must be worn regularly to maintain comfort

Contact Lens Care & Maintenance

Caring for contact lenses is different than caring for eyeglasses. Your optometrist will provide you with specific directions to promote the longevity of your lenses.

Replacement schedules for contact lenses differ based on lens type:

  • Daily disposable: Daily disposable lenses can be more expensive, but are popular due to their convenience.
  • Monthly or bi-weekly disposable lenses: These disposable lenses must be removed every evening and soaked in a multi-purpose solution.
